A fashionista who is responsible for bringing many large fashion brands into the Japanese market, Eri is a long time supporter of the Ippie brand and one of the sweetest girls you will ever meet.

1.Can you give me a description of what you do?

I work in the brand marketing and management division of one of the largest Japanese trading companies. My job involves introducing emerging trendy North American brands to the Japanese market through research, exclusive imports, distributions and license developments.

2.Your job often involves collaborations with celebrities. What was it like to work with them?

I used to be nervous at first, but now I just forget who is on the other side of the table because we are very focused on our work and we are all passionate and serious about the brands and the fashion businesses. I admit that taking a picture with them or getting an autograph afterwards is always a plus!

3.When and why did you become an Ippie jewelry fan?

I think I started wearing Ippie a few weeks after the brand was introduced. It’s elegant and very practical. I also happen to admire the designer. ☺

4.When and for what occasions do you wear Ippie jewelry?

Well, because Ippie is elegant I feel it is appropriate for any occasion. I often wear it for meetings with my clients. I often receive compliments from famous designers and celebrities. It’s always flattering, to say the least!

5.What is your favorite Ippie jewelry?

I love the Shanghai Collection. They are beautiful Asian-influenced designs. I especially love the "Sterling Silver Small Filigree Hoop with White Mother of Pearl". It goes well with any kind of outfit.

6.What is your favorite fashion trend now?

I used to wear a lot of dark colored clothes but I am into bright colors this season, such as green, purple, pink . . . these colors make me feel happy!

7.What are your favorite stores or brands?

Jovovich-Hawk, Milly and Vince. They are just three of many brands I work with, but I genuinely believe in their design philosophies and the overall look. I especially love Jovovich-Hawk because their materials and designs are very feminine, yet with a distinct edge

8.Do you have any advice for people who want to be in the fashion industry?

Be aware of upcoming trends and stores. If you see a trend that is new and popular, then it’s already last season. The best way to learn about upcoming trends is to shop and observe what would be trendy. Of course, one benefit of being in fashion is that in our industry; shopping is the same as market research!

Ippie Design dedicates new Breast Cancer Jewelry Collection to their mothers.

Co-Founders Sandy Ip and Junto Nozawa hope to raise awareness and help find a cure for Breast Cancer with the release of the new breast cancer collection.

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 29, 2008 - Most recently, Ippie Design, an up-and-coming jewelry company, joined in the battle against breast cancer after being inspired by their mothers who are both fighting the disease. The company announced the launch of the new "Breast Cancer Collection" that will promote awareness, and from which 20% of the proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The beautiful collection is in honor of, Mitsuko Nozawa and Shing King Ip, the mothers of Junto and Sandy.

"It has been a tough year for all of us. My mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer 13 years ago; the cancer was in remission but has recently came back. She has started chemo and is staying optimistic. Sandy and I wanted to create something our mothers would be proud of, and with Sandy's creative brilliance she made a beautiful collection" says Junto Nozawa.

With Breast Cancer still affecting millions of women, Ippie Design joins the fight to find a cure. "My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. Suffering through chemo but staying strong for the family, she has inspired me in so many ways. So we want to try and help those who are battling to survive" says Sandy Ip.

The Breast Cancer Collection features the symbolic pink ribbon but with a "twist". "The collection represents the journey that our mothers and family members are going through and the twists and turns that life brings us, but no matter what we will all stay strong and positive" says Sandy.

2007 was an emotional year for us at Ippie Design. My mother and my partner's mother were diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Witnessing our mothers going through Chemotherapy is a painful experience, especially when we feel that there aren't much we could do to help.
With our hopes and prayers in mind, we designed a Breast Cancer line. We dedicate this Breast Cancer Collection to our mothers who inspire us everyday and to those who are going through the same emotional experience as us. Ippie in Hong Kong

I have been staying in Hong Kong for a month already. Hong Kong is such a fun place I wish I have more time to enjoy it!

Introducing the Modern Collection

The Modern Collection was inspired by a contemporary lifestyle that I observed in New York City, Tokyo and Hong Kong. The collection currently consists of four pairs of earrings and it focuses on simplicity in shapes, lines and colors.

I want the collection to have an industrial and a bit of a futuristic feel, but since I love details, I used multiple silver plates and interlinked them with connecting rings.

The earrings (except the Unique Matte and Hammered Hoop Earrings) all have a rigid look. It is contemporary but very wearable. I used silk matte finish on all of them, the color and texture of the silver plates reminded me of my Mac Powerbook. The idea to interlink the small silver plates was inspired by interlinking subway trains that I take everyday.

Holiday Celebration!

About 150 guests attended the Ippie Design and Gana Atelier Holiday Celebration on Friday night. It was great to see friends and to meet new people. Special thanks to Tak who was our awesome DJ, and played wonderful music all night long! We had so much fun that I am so looking forward to the next event!

Other than showcasing Ippie Design's latest jewelry collection, this holiday party also featured young artists from the Gana Atelier. Jong Ho Ji (sculptor) and Tae Won Jang (photographer) are two very talented emerging artists. Be on the lookout for them!

This year to celebrate the holidays and another year of business, Gana Atelier and Ippie Design are hosting a joint holiday party at Gana’s Chelsea Loft Studios on November 9th. Artists and friends will gather to have fun (the most important thing!) and have the chance to view some exciting new paintings and sculptures, as well as to view Ippie Design’s new jewelry collection.

I went over to Gana’s Chelsea Loft Studios last week and met with this amazing sculptor who is currently exhibiting in New York and will also be at our party! His name is Ji, Yong-Ho. All of his sculptures are made of tires. They are amazing, take a look at them!!!!

Hello from ippie

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in New York, I went to see a new show "Jump" in the Union Square Theatre. It was one of the most entertaining shows I've seen in quite sometime. After the show, I walked around Soho and looked at all the new winter fashion displayed in the windows. I don't know what exactly inspired me, but I saw this beautiful shape in my mind and I quickly sketched it so I would not forget. I was never a natural at drawing and painting. I was brought up in a business oriented family and my education was mainly focused on science and business. But I was somewhat a dreamer and always believed that if I have faith, my dreams will come true.

I received many emails after the Money Magazine's article about Ippie came out. I am extremely thankful that these people took the time to write to me and felt inspired by my story. For me, I think my story is a common one and if I can do it, so can you. It’s taking the first step that’s the most difficult but once you conjure up the courage to do it, it all falls in place.

A Short Film

My friend David Chen recently entered a film making contest. He was given a required dialogue, prop and character and he needs to make the film in 48 hours. David, who is in Marketing, who had never made a film in his whole life, gethered a few interested friends and made the film over the weekend. He said it was very interesting, difficult, and he will do better next time. I really believe we can do anything if we put our minds to it and act on it. Long time no blog!! It's been quite a busy month working and travelling and working more!

So, there are quite a few things to update about Ippie Design. First of all, our new collections are finally finished, catalogued and available for wholesale buyers while our previous collections continue to sell well. Secondly, we are being featured as one of the cover stories in Money Magazine's July issue. Money Magazine even flew me out to LA for the cover's photo shoot. It was such an exciting trip where I got to meet four other entrepreneurs that are also featured on the cover. The photo shoot was so much fun, I have attached some behind the scene pictures along with this post. So if you have a chance pick up the July issue of Money Magazine! Once again we are appearing in one of their Fashion Preview stories, which gives editorial trend guides to Accessory buyers from all types of retail stores.

The Ippie earrings featured in the magazine are a pair of contemporary oval hoops with rectangular black agate stones. With its sleek shape and beautiful stones, we completed this piece with a silk matte finish!

New York, New York, March 2007 – The fear of living from one meager paycheck to another, the fear of the mundane inspired this young accountant into becoming an up-and-coming jewelry designer.

We all have that fear- be it the fear of change or the fear of failure. Sandy Ip, however, decided it was time to give fear the cold shoulder and make a significant change in her life: retiring from the accounting world and going into jewelry design. Sandy has been designing jewelry for many years but it had taken backseat to everything else. Busy making business connections from her days in college, Sandy found the resources to make what seemed to be just a hobby into a dream job. “I wanted jewelry with lots of texture and lots of details, something different and that’s what Ippie Design is about”. She partnered with her long time friend, Jay Nozawa, and started Ippie Design (www.ippie.com) in July of 2005.

“She’s always seemed to be ahead of the game in terms of fashion” raves partner Jay Nozawa. “I saw her designs and the passion she had for them and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to be a part of something special”. Sandy wanted to focus on jewelry that was catered to young chic professionals who wanted something unique. “Ippie Design’ jewelry represents women who aren’t afraid to take risks, go after what they love and be who they are. It takes a long time to create these special earrings, there is a lot of detail and craftsmanship that goes into each style” says Sandy.

Jay and Sandy both received their bachelor degrees from Babson College’s well-respected business program in Massachusetts. “We have used what we have learned in school, how to start and manage your own business and especially managing Ippie Design’s cash flow”.

Based out of her small studio apt in Midtown New York, Sandy and Jay have been packing orders and making sure that all of their small and large clientele are happy with what they have purchased. “This was not as easy as we thought, going to craft fairs, tradeshows, visiting boutiques door to door, and cold-calling. Any free time we had we were working on the Ippie Brand. Anything we can do to sell our jewelry, we tried it! With a tight budget of course!” says Jay.

While they have struggled for years, 2007 looks to be the breakthrough year for Ippie DESIGN. “Yes! I got orders from major department stores! Two huge department stores have ordered from us, and we’re very excited! It means so much to us that Large National Retailers are going to be showcasing Ippie Design Jewelry throughout the US and possibly Internationally!” says Sandy Ip. The future is certainly looking bright for this young jewelry designer and her partner. Who would have thought that this accountant-cum-designer and her unique designs would have made her presence known in the jewelry industry this quickly? Comicon 2007

This past saturday was the 2nd Annual Comic Con in New York City. I went there with Jay. Compared to last year, this year's Comic Con was 100 times better than the 1st annual Comic Con. I heard more than 18,000 people showed up this year. I was mainly there to support my friend, Josh Z. Carter, who is an amazing artist. He was in the artist alley showcasing his work. If you are interested in learning more about his comics, checkout his website at www.joshzcarter.com.

I also was able to see some interesting people such as Stan Lee, Gary Coleman, Fat Mama from the reality show hehehehe. Call me a geek I had lots of fun!

Edward "Willie" Carman wanted a ticket out of town, and the Army provided it. Raised in the projects by a single mother in this blighted, old industrial steel town outside Pittsburgh, the 18-year-old saw the U.S. military as an opportunity.
"I'm not doing it to you, I'm doing it for me," he told his mother, Joanna Hawthorne, after coming home from high school one day and surprising her with the news.
When Carman died in Iraq three years ago at age 27, he had money saved for college, a fiancee and two kids — including a baby son he'd never met. Neighbors in Hawthorne's mobile home park collected $400 and left it in an envelope in her door.
For a year after his death, Hawthorne took a chair to the cemetery nearly every day, sat next to his grave and talked quietly. Her vigil continues even now; the visits have slowed to once a week, but the pain sticks.

I have been to malls and markets in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Beijing selling only pirated CDs, DVDs, toys, games, brand name bags, clothes, jewelry, watches etc. I thought I have seen them all, but I guess I was WRONG. Apparently people are making fake eggs and they taste just like the real ones too. These fake egg makers are really creative huh.......

Looking Forward

For the pass two months, I have been working on my new collection. The samples are ready and we are going to present them in different tradeshows around the country. Tradeshow schedules will be announced on my site and on this blog shortly.

2006 has been a very exciting year for Ippie Design. We spent the first two quarters of 2006 planning and producing the Shanghai collection. In August 2006, the Shanghai collection was officially launched. Since then we have been developing our wholesale accounts, and now they are available in boutiques in 10 states in the U.S. We are also working on an order with a major department store. In October 2006, we re-launched our online retail site and will continue to make improvements.

There are many goals to reach and challenges to overcome this year. Although silver prices are surging and will most likely continue to climb due to various economical factors, Ippie Design is committed to delivering the best quality silver jewelry that our customers always expect from us. Our customers mean everything to us and it is our responsibility to make sure they are happy.

We are confident about overcoming challenges and reaching our goals this year. Thank you for your support and let’s look forward to a great 2007!

The Slava's Snowshow is going to END soon!

If you are in the NYC area, go checkout the Slava’s Snowshow because the show is going to end on Jan 14th. I saw this show twice this year and it is definitely one of my favorites. This show is cute, funny and sad…well everyone feels differently about the show, so go check it out! One important thing is to make sure you get the Orchestra seats! My New Year's Resolutions

I received a holiday greeting email from my cousin in Shanghai this morning. Surprisingly the attachment was not a greeting card but a slide show of children in need from Africa.

These children have to walk miles just to get water. Many of them have to take care of themselves and their younger siblings because their parents died from diseases. They face starvation and death everyday. I have no idea what their world is like and I don’t even dare to imagine.

Many years ago, I stumped upon a photo of a vulture preying on a young emaciated Sudanese toddler at The Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas. It was an overwhelming image that I was trying very hard to hold back my tears. It was the first time I heard of this famous, award winning and dead photographer, Kevin Carter. His life was very admirable and tragic itself.

For a long period of time, I tried not to read about all the wars and the bad things happening in this world because I feel powerless and guilty. I have finally realized ignoring them does not make me feel any better.

We have the luxury to create art, to imagine, to be materialistic, to be entrepreneurs. This kind of luxury is something we cannot take for granted. I think to celebrate our lives, to live it to the fullest and to be aware of all the people that need our help is what we can do.

My new year’s resolutions are to love myself, my friends and family better. As for the children in need, in honor of ippie design, we are donating to Oprah’s Angel Network starting from today.

Got a call from UPS and found out that my Christmas gifts are arriving tomorrow from London! No suprises because I ordered them myself. I will probably open the package and stare at them for about 27.6 hours straight.

Thursday Night with Jon Stewart

The weather has been really warm in New York City! (Did you know that it was snowing in Seattle and Dallas? Strange weather huh?) Anyway, other than the usual Thursday nights, this week I went to see the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

The show is usually taped around 6pm and aired at 11pm EST on Comedy Central. I was excited to see Jon Stewart and his guest, Jack Black! Jon Stewart is amazing, during the entire taping, he did not make one mistake. I pretty much laughed and clapped through the whole show. Well the truth is, I was trying to laugh as loud as I can, so later I can say “hey that’s my voice on TV!”

After the show, I went to my favorite Thai restaurant called Won Dee, which I believe offers the best Thai food in the city. I had so much food that I needed to walk it off. On the way home, I passed by the Rockefeller center. The big Christmas tree is already up and lit! I just can’t believe another year has passed! Time flies!

When I got home, the Daily Show was on and I was very focused on the sounds that the audience made. It was too bad that I could not identify my voice on the show, but I still managed to fall asleep with a big smile. ;)

My Jewelry Making Process

Some people always ask me how I design jewelry. Since I never had any formal training, I just learn as I go.
I thought it would be interesting to show the process of how a pair of earrings are born at Ippie Design. (If you have any suggestions please feel free to leave comments or contact me!) Here is a snapshot:

First I have to get inspired! With the idea in mind, I start working on a design pattern. In this example, I wanted to create a contemporary pair of earrings that represents nature, wilderness and Africa without looking like the typical African tribal styles. So the first step I took was developing a zebra pattern.

After I decided on the pattern, I design the details of the earrings by sketching it out. (Below is the final sketch of the earrings) Other decisions that need to be made in creating the earrings are the materials (sterling silver & dark oak wood in this case), the size and the finish.

Next step is making the design mold! The pictures below show the casting molds. Casting molds are made from wax and then translated into molds below. You can see the back of the mold before insterting dark oak wood.

And at last...the zebra pattern earrings with inlayed dark oak wood are born!!

The Picasso & American Art Exhibition

It was a beautiful, sunny day here in New York City (though the unusual warm weather has been somewhat worrisome). I met up with my friend Cynthia (she is also a model for ippie Design, some of her photos will be on ippie.com shortly) to checkout the Picasso Exhibition at the Whitney Museum in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

I am not going to lie. I can rarely understand Picasso’s paintings. I always try to find the meanings behind a piece of art, but I always realize that art is something we can all enjoy and love visually without understanding the story behind it, if there are any stories

I am fascinated by Picasso’s Cubism work. The integration of multiple views and perspectives, geometric reconstruction of objects, merging of figures, backgrounds and time made his work so interesting to look at. It inspires my mind to wonder and to imagine all the different interpretations I get from his artwork, and that is what I enjoy the most. It feels like a puzzle and I’m trying to piece it together.

This Exhibition showcases not only Picasso’s work, but also many work from a diverse group of American artists who are directly influenced by Picasso. You can find paintings from artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Jackson Pollock and explanations of how Picasso inspired them and their artwork. Overall, it is a very interesting exhibition; it ends on January 28, 2007. So check it out!

Jewelry & Style

Some people say you can tell a person’s personality by looking at their shoes. I say you can tell a person’s style by looking at the jewelry they wear. In the movie Devil Wears Prada, when the "zero fashion sense" Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) first showed up for her interview, she was wearing a Tiffany look alike necklace. Her whole look was very tasteless. Tiffany makes beautiful jewelry, but some people wear them because of its brand only. Luxury brands don’t equal to style; you ultimately create your style.

When designing jewelry, I focus not only on the style, but also on the quality. I think the quality of the jewelry is very important because it represents substance. A woman cannot just be beautiful to look at; she has to have substance in order to be happy and attract others. In my opinion, wearing good quality and stylish jewelry shows not only a person’s taste, but also her style in life!

Obviously, I am in love with jewelry. I love jewelry that are delicate yet bold yet with a sense of simplicity…that is the kind of passion I put behind my jewelry.

I read an interesting article today by Allison Kaplan from the pioneer press about Accessories. Here is a snippet of the article:

Former Nordstrom fashion director Kevin Quinn spent the past year and a half organizing the wardrobes of Twin Cities residents. What he discovered: We don't need any more clothes.
What we do need is the know-how to put the pieces together in new and adventurous arrangements, he says. And accessories are one of the easiest and often most cost-effective ways to do that.
"This is America — we're going to keep buying," Quinn says. "Accessorizing is the new, modern way to dress."

I agree with what Kevin Quinn said. As I grow older, my own style is moving towards wearing simple clothing with dramatic accessories. Many women do not have the luxury of spending hours in front of the mirror everyday, with the right accessories, you can look fashionable without trying too hard, and most importantly it’s quick too!

In this section, experts showed how textured surfaces, exotic materials and delicate details add dimensions and unexpected combinations to spring's soft silhouettes.

Halloween Party 2006

Ippie hosted a Halloween 2006 party on October 28th in New York City's Chelsea hotspot SOL. Many good friends and customers came dressed up for the party. We all had lots of fun, lots of laughs and DANCED ALL NIGHT LONG!! (I needed the exercise) The funniest costume by far was Lt. Dangle from Reno 911. See for yourself!

Ladies Who Launch LIVE Event

ippie jewelry was featured in the Ladies Who Launch’s LIVE event in New York City on Oct 19th 2006. Over 500 professional ladies and media such as the Oprah Magazine, Glamour Magazine, Elle, all attended this exciting event. The event started from 9 am and ended at 6pm. Event details included many successful women entrepreneurs sharing their struggles and their successes, which I personally found very inspirational. NY post reporter Paula Froelich, NBC Co-Anchor Perri Peltz all gave inspirational speeches giving us entrepreneurs hope. There was also a fashion show where ippie jewelry was featured on most of the models. I was so happy to see all of my jewelry being exhibited to everyone at the event. I got alot of positive reviews and feedback from everyone! I also donated 10% of my sales of the day to No Doubt, a non-profit organization that helps disadvantaged students to graduate from high school.

It all started…

Although I have been working on my jewelry company since early 2005, my first line of sterling silver jewelry was officially launched in the August 2006 market week in New York, focusing on my first line called “The Shanghai Collection”.

My travels to China over the years inspired this collection. I was in Shanghai, where old meets new is evident throughout the city. Enormous skyscrapers standing behind ancient Chinese architectures, western influences mixing in with the 5000 year old culture, creating a sharp contrast that is both exciting and unique. Inspired by this observation, I designed the Shanghai collection by combining detailed traditional patterns and bold contemporary shapes. In order to further give the jewelry a subtle touch of modernity, I used high polish finish to add shine to each piece.
